Distant sensing functions embody monitoring deforestation in areas such as the Amazon Basin , the effects of local weather change on glaciers and Arctic and Antarctic areas, and depth sounding of coastal and ocean depths.
The following topic areas are notably emphasised: atmospheric dynamics and general circulation; synoptic meteorology; climate methods in particular areas, such because the tropics, the polar caps and the oceans; atmospheric energetics; numerical modeling and forecasting; bodily and chemical processes within the environment, together with radiation, optical results, electrical energy, and atmospheric turbulence and transport processes, and mathematical and statistical techniques utilized to meteorological data sets.
As a prerequisite it is necessary to have a deep understanding of the complex environmental processes that contribute to climate change. The College’s Department of Physics actively collaborates with the Division of Atmospheric Science at the Desert Analysis Institute.

The UMBC Atmospheric Physics program has contributed considerably to that addition to five tenured/tenure-track college, there are 10 faculty affiliated with the Physics Department by way of JCET, a further 9 JCET faculty affiliated in other departments on campus and three adjunct college (one every from NASA Goddard, NOAA NESDIS, and Howard University).
