High temperature petrology and geochemistry at Illinois consists of two main foci: The primary focuses on understanding the charges, time scales and mechanisms of melting and differentiation of the Earth’s magmas. During his summer time doing field work in Mexico, he met Berkeley Lab’s Marcelo Lippmann, who was attending a symposium on the Cerro Prieto geothermal area, the subject of a collaborative analysis undertaking between the Lab (funded by the U.S. Department of Energy) and the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), Mexico’s state-owned utility.
Utilizing neutron activation analysis, Nobel Laureate Luis Alvarez discovered the presence of the element iridium when studying samples from the Okay-T boundary layer (i.e., the layer of sediment laid down at the end of the Cretaceous and starting of the Tertiary Durations).
