Atmospheric Physics At UM
The on-campus Atmospheric Physics group develops and makes use of multispectral photoacoustic devices and solar photometers to measure atmospheric aerosols, with applications to local weather, visibility, air air pollution and public well being. The group carries out fundamental analysis in areas of physics associated to (1) planetary fluid dynamics and local weather dynamics using concept and computation, (2) experimental design and implementation of global observational/distant sensing techniques, and (three) state-of-the-artwork analysis of observed global-scale knowledge.
The UMBC Atmospheric Physics program has contributed considerably to that addition to five tenured/tenure-monitor school, there are 10 faculty affiliated with the Physics Division via JCET, an extra 9 JCET faculty affiliated in other departments on campus and 3 adjunct college (one every from NASA Goddard, NOAA NESDIS, and Howard College).
Atmospheric thermodynamics and dynamics are initially reviewed, then the spatial and temporal structure of the atmospheric boundary layer is studied, beginning with a dry convective layer after which considering a cloud-topped layer. All college members accept undergraduate student researchers into their labs.
Some physics departments provide an atmospheric physics option for bachelor’s degree programs in applied physics, and some colleges grant graduate levels in atmospheric physics. Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics discusses physical and chemical processes – in each clear and cloudy atmospheres – including radiation, optical and electrical results, precipitation and cloud microphysics.
From 1 January 2018 Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP) will slightly increase the article processing charges. The research within the atmospheric physics group also consists of some new efforts within the areas of hurricane modeling and modeling of low-level winds with applications to PBL/air pollution studies.
