The vertebrate paleontology collection consists of roughly eighty,000 cataloged specimens. The combined assortment is especially strong in local Pleistocene and Holocene fossils, including materials from Massive Bone Lick , Kentucky (the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology). The WAVP 2017 Meeting will carry collectively paleontologists from across the US to socialize and talk about and present their analysis from over the previous year.
Vertebrate palaeontology is a vigorous field, with new discoveries reported each week… and never only dinosaurs! The nucleus of the collection was made below the auspices of Works Tasks Administration within the late 1930s and early Forties, led by the museum’s first director, J. Willis Stovall (1891-1953).
In total, the Paleontology & Geology Department cares for greater than three million specimens of fossil invertebrates, vertebrates, vegetation, microfossils and trace fossils. In my curatorial role, I oversee the Museum’s fossil vertebrate analysis program and collections and am a global authority on the anatomy and evolution of fossil reptiles, notably marine types akin to Sauropterygia.
A correlation chart and 11 maps and sections are included. We work on initiatives ranging from research of within-lineage evolution to regional neighborhood paleoecology, utilizing information from fossils, lithology, stratigraphy, phylogenetics, biogeography and fashionable organisms.
The editorial workers of the JVP is appointed by the Publications Committee and consists of the Senior Editor, Managing Editor, Technical Editor, Memoirs Editor, Managing Editor, Ebook Critiques Editor, and Advertising Editor, working with an Editorial Board consisting of revered specialists within the varied sub-disciplines of vertebrate paleontology.
